After a Car Accident First Steps

It can be difficult to know what to do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident. Apart from being unsettled and shocked, you may have injuries that you are not aware of at the time of the accident. It is important that you remain calm and gather as much information as you can.

Our firm recommends that you follow this simple list of steps following an accident:

  • STOP IMMEDIATELY: Try to avoid obstructing traffic. If you are able, warn oncoming vehicles using emergency flashers, reflectors or flares
  • Turn ignition off and beware of engine fire
  • Dial 911 for police, then assist injured
  • If your vehicle has Onstar, notify Onstar and describe your, or others’, injuries
  • Secure license numbers, makes and models of vehicles involved, and vehicles of witnesses
  • Secure names, addresses and telephone numbers of other drivers, witnesses and injured persons
  • Make a sketch or rough drawing of scene showing position of vehicles, and/or other details
  • Keep calm and don’t argue
  • DO NOT accuse anyone or admit guilt or fault
  • Go to the doctor if you have any pain, soreness, numbness or nausea
  • Notify your insurance carrier or local agent immediately
  • File a report with police or state as advised by law enforcement
  • Get the name and number of police responding to the accident
